The Group Chief Engineer is charged with the objective of reducing prime fossil fuel energy consumption by a volume of 5% per annum as a minimum. This is monitored and communicated monthly to all senior managers. Examples of progress in this area include the installation of a new air conditioning chiller system that is 25% more energy efficient than the machine it replaced; the use of remote heat pumps to heat and cool areas of the hotel in winter thus enabling the main chiller to be turned off. These 2 initiatives resulted in an audited saving of 20% in electricity (December to December 2005-2006).
